MALACAÑANG yesterday said President Arroyo would proceed with the appointment of the next chief justice when the Supreme Court’s decision becomes final and executory.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said Arroyo could appoint the successor of Chief Justice Reynato Puno, who retires on May 17, because the judiciary is not covered by the election ban which runs from March 10 to June 30, the end of Arroyo’s term.
Ruling on petitions in a special en banc session, the tribunal also said the Judicial and Bar Council may submit a list of at least three names to the President and need not wait the vacancy to come in force.
