BAGUIO CITY—A P2-billion debt and complicated talks among the extended family of the late President Corazon Cojuangco-Aquino are delaying settlement of a workers’ dispute over Hacienda Luisita, which the clan owns, a Liberal Party (LP) official said Sunday.
Former secretaries of the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) are attempting to help the LP presidential candidate, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, find a solution to the problem of one of the nation’s largest sugar plantations, said Florencio Abad Jr., the party’s campaign manager.
An agrarian reform secretary himself in President Corazon Aquino’s administration, Abad said experts had tried to settle the issue, but talks with members of the Cojuangco clan had turned out to be complicated.
