Marines chief vows not to support military junta

MANILA, Philippines – A top military officer has denied reports that the military would set up a junta in case of a failure of elections on May 10.
Major General Juancho Sabban, head of the Philippine Marines, said he was against a military junta. “No more military junta,” Sabban said. “Ayaw namin doon (We don’t want it).”
Sabban said the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) would work to ensure the success of the May 10 polls.

Military officials deny ‘possible’ junta if May polls fail
MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Officials from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class ’77 and ’78 asserted Monday that there will be no junta in case there will be a failure of elections come May.
“I will assure you there is nothing like that and we are not going to be party to any unconstitutional means of taking over the government,” said Army Chief Lieutenant General Reynaldo Mapagu in a chance interview following the 113th Philippine Army Founding Anniversary celebration at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig.
