ONE of the hallmarks of Mishil’s rule is her ability to bully and bend people with outright threats and innuendo, while remaining calm, a slight smile playing around her lips, her voice even and even flirtatious.
Her philosophy is that power is an end in itself, and that “the people” are best served by keeping them ignorant and insecure, living in fear of Heaven’s wrath and reading all sorts of superstitious symbolism in natural events. But as Princess Deokman intuits, Mishil actually lives in abject fear of “the people,” who once they wake up to her manipulations could topple her from her post of illegitimately gained power.
I’ve written before that GMA has the uncanny knack of “exceeding our worst fears.” Just when we think she has reached the depths of ignominy, she pulls another stunt that stuns us and momentarily leaves us speechless. She promised that she would not seek a second term and then turned around and launched her candidacy, going to the extent of manipulating the polls as we found out belatedly in the “Hello, Garci” tapes.
