Enrile, LP’s Bautista engage in verbal tussle

Posted by akosistella on April 6, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and rival Liberal Party senatorial candidate Martin Bautista on Tuesday engaged in a verbal tussle during a forum for senatorial candidates organized by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

The word war started when Bautista suggested that Enrile should drop his re-election bid after staying in politics for 44 years. “You should give others a chance,” the LP bet told Enrile, who is running under the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino banner.

The remark irritated Enrile, who shot back: “What do you know? I challenge you to run with me and let’s see if you can catch me.”

Dr. Bautista does have a point. I mean, Enrile has been in my consciousness ever since I can remember. He’s had a long useful political career. And while I don’t have any personal quarrels w/ him, I think it’s about time we voters look to the younger crop of Senatorial aspirants who are as effective, skilled, and smart like Enrile. Siguro naman sa dami ng tumatakbo, meron kasinggaling nya.

Senator Enrile doesn’t have to take it personally. It is about time to get a new set of senators. If only we could replace at least half of the senators with new faces. These incumbent senators have the advantage of being in the people’s consciousness because of so much media mileage. Let us start scrutinizing the new candidates. Give them a chance!
