THE GAP BETWEEN NOYNOY AQUINO AND Manny Villar is now 12 points. That’s what the latest Pulse Asia survey says. Aquino got 37 percent and Villar 25 percent. It’s the newest twist in a campaign that has unfolded with epic twists and turns.

It has certainly defied expectations. Early this year, when Aquino’s lead fell to only three points, 37 percent to Villar’s 34, giving them a statistical tie in SWS’s poll, the pundits were saying the tide had turned. With his billions, they said, Villar was going to steamroll past Aquino. He wouldn’t stop until he had every adult, and not just every kid, humming his jingle. He was the kind of man, the pundits said, to seize the smallest opportunity and hold on to it tenaciously.

Then, suddenly, inexplicably, miraculously, he unraveled.
