MANILA, Philippines—The campaigns of the frontrunners in the race for the presidency are not addressing the real problem in the country—the structures and inequities that condemn majority of Filipinos to a life of poverty, according to civil society leaders.
The country is hampered by various conditions that promote poverty—income inequality, lack of land, lack of productive employment, insufficient funding for social services and the non-competitiveness as a place for doing business, according to Social Watch Philippines.
But the campaigns of the two leading presidential candidates, Senators Manuel Villar and Benigno Aquino III, are not addressing these, according to Marivic Raquiza, a convenor of the group.
