Approval of NP-NPC coalition bad news for LP

Posted by akosistella on April 9, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – The reported approval by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) of the coalition between Senator Manuel Villar Jr.’s Nacionalista Party (NP) and his running mate Senator Loren Legarda’s Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) means bad news to Senator Benigno Aquino III and the Liberal Party (LP).

Combined, the NP-NPC is likely to defeat the LP in getting the accreditation as the dominant minority in the May elections. Newsbreak’s analysis of the parties’ submissions to Comelec shows that the new coalition beats LP in 3 out of 4 criteria in determining the dominant minority–number of incumbent officials, political chapters, and candidates fielded in the upcoming elections.

The dominant minority accreditation is important because it gives the party the right to get a server that, on election day, will automatically receive vote transmissions from precincts all over the country.
