LP contests NP-NPC ‘bogus’ merger

MANILA, Philippines—The Liberal Party (LP) will appeal the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) approval of what it said was the “bogus” merger of the Nacionalista Party (NP) and Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), saying that it would leave no “real” opposition party with access to the election results in May.
“One has to question why the Comelec would give access to servers to both administration parties. Isn’t that worrisome? We plan to file a motion for reconsideration. There should be parity in the system to have a basis for credible elections,” said LP presidential candidate Sen. Benigno Aquino III.
The LP has claimed that the NP standard-bearer, Sen. Manuel Villar, is the secret candidate of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. According to Aquino, the NPC has been a long-time administration ally, especially in the House of Representatives.
