LP warns of ‘Ampatuan cheating machine’ in May polls

Posted by akosistella on April 19, 2010

LP campaign manager Florencio “Butch” Abad said the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) decision to clear Zaldy and Akmad Ampatuan from involvement in the Maguindanao massacre could mean that the “Ampatuan cheating machine” would be put to work again on election day.

“With 23 days left before the May presidential elections, the timing of the dismissal of the case and order of the release of the two … can only fuel further suspicion that the Arroyo regime will once again employ the dreaded but effective Ampatuan cheating machine to manipulate the coming elections according to Arroyo’s whims,” Abad said in a statement.

Smartmatic-TIM, the contractor for the May 10 automated elections, has started setting up satellite equipment in Negros Occidental for the rapid transmission of results.

A report on Visayan Daily Star said Smartmatic-TIM set up the first of six Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) at the provincial capitol in Bacolod, the capital city.

Provincial coordinator John Cabalo said the provincial capitol’s Social Hall will be used as the base for incoming election returns that will be transmitted by precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines.
