Deputy jail warden sacked over Andal press con

MANILA, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno ordered the relief of a jail official for allowing accused mass murderer Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan Jr. to hold a press conference in the Bicutan jail to endorse a political candidate.

Puno ordered the relief of Senior Inspector Lloyd Gonzaga as deputy warden of the Quezon City Jail annex located in Bicutan, Taguig.

Gonzaga reportedly allowed Ampatuan to hold a press conference inside the jail facilities last Tuesday.

Families of Maguindanao massacre victims seek Agra’s disbarment

MANILA, Philippines – The families of the victims of the Maguindanao massacre last November yesterday sought the disbarment of Justice Secretary Alberto Agra for dismissing the murder charges against two prominent members of the Ampatuan clan.

Family members of 12 of the massacre victims, represented by lawyer Harry Roque, filed a complaint with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) seeking the removal of Agra from the roll of attorneys.

Agra on Saturday ordered the dropping of murder charges against suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan and Maguindanao Vice Gov. Akmad Ampatuan Sr.

Jamby threatens to go on hunger strike

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal threatened to go on a hunger strike unless the Commission on Elections (Comelec) adopts a parallel manual count in this year’s polls.

Madrigal made the threat after insisting on seeing Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento immediately despite being told to wait.

She told the Comelec staff that she did not have the time to wait for Sarmiento to finish his press conference because she had a flight to catch.

Endorsements seen to boost Binay’s rating

MANILA, Philippines – Endorsements by Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero and gay-lesbian party Ang Ladlad could further boost the ratings of vice-presidential candidate Jejomar Binay in the homestretch of the vice-presidential race.

In the March 21 to 28 Pulse Asia survey of 3,000 respondents, the Makati City mayor received a 19% rating, just 4 points behind vice-presidential candidate Sen. Loren Legarda who got 23%.

Dr. Ana Maria Tabunda, Pulse Asia research fellow, said Binay, running mate of former President Joseph Estrada, is closing on No. 2 candidate Legarda.

CA bars taipan Lucio Tan’s daughter from running

THE COURT OF APPEALS HAS BARRED A daughter of taipan Lucio Tan from running for Congress in the first district of Quezon City on the ground that she is not a registered voter.

In a ruling dated April 20, a special division of the appellate court’s Eighth Division ordered the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to remove Vivienne Tan’s name from the voters’ list in Precinct 0853-A of Barangay Sto. Domingo, Quezon City.
