No directive given to support Legarda, NPC party man says (and other newsbits)

DANAO CITY, Cebu, Philippines—Senator Loren Legarda is the Nationalist People’s Coalition candidate for vice president, but NPC Representative Ramon “Red” Durano VI claims there’s no party directive to support her.

“To be truthful about it, I didn’t get any directive to support Loren for vice president,” Durano said at a rally for administration standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro Jr. at the Freedom Stage here Tuesday night.

That is why, the re-electionist lawmaker said, Cebu’s fifth district was supporting Legarda’s rival, Senator Manuel Roxas II of the Liberal Party.

Gordon dares all presidential bets to take psychiatric test

Presidential aspirant Richard Gordon on Wednesday dared all presidential candidates to undergo a psychiatric test to prove that they are mentally fit to lead the country.

The Bagumbayan standard-bearer made the remarks after another bogus psychiatric test result surfaced on Tuesday, supposedly with Liberal Party standard bearer Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III as subject while he was still in college.

“Kung ako lalaki meron nangyari sa buhay ko na ako eh I had to get psychiatric examination, it is the height of responsibility na sabihin ko nagpa-psychiatric examination ako and sabihin mo I’m ok. Kung hindi naman, nagtatago ka [at] masama yun,” he said.

Villar eyes zero corruption under his administration

Under a Manny Villar presidency, all government transactions will be open for public scrutiny, and all public biddings televised.

Villar, the standard-bearer of the Nacionalista Party (NP), made the promise when he took the hot seat in GMA News’ special election program “Kandidato” that was aired Wednesday night.

“Dapat televised lahat ng bidding, iimbitahin lahat ng media, lahat ng gustong mag-imbestiga, tumingin ng mga kontrata, open yan. (We will televise all the biddings, invite the media and all those who want to investigate and look at the contracts),” he said.

Noynoy squeezes in 20-minute date with girlfriend Shalani

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte , Philippines – There’s always time for love, even for presidential candidates – and even if it’s just 20 minutes.

Liberal Party presidential candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III managed to squeeze in a brief moment to celebrate the 30th birthday last April 27 of his girlfriend, Valenzuela City Second District Councilor Shalani Soledad, despite the hectic and punishing schedule of the political campaign.

Aquino admitted to reporters that he had a 20-minute dinner with Soledad after the journalists, especially the female reporters, kept badgering him about his birthday gift to his girlfriend of almost two years.

Party-list groups address issues in Rotary meet

Representatives of five party-list groups on Wednesday met with Rotarians to discuss their advocacies and their proposed solutions to problems hounding the country today.

During the forum RVOTE, nominees of the party-list groups Ahon, AKBAYAN! Citizens’ Action Party, Citizens’ Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC), Kabataan Party-list, and Pro-active on Climate Change Leaders (PCL) answered questions from members of the Rotary Club of Makati North.

When asked on their main advocacies, Ahon, which was represented by Dante Francis “Klink” Ang 2nd, said it will engage and intensify a campaign to assure the welfare of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Comelec: NP can name Sanchez’s substitute

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday said the Nacionalista Party (NP) can field another candidate to replace former Batangas governor Armando Sanchez who died Tuesday night after suffering a stroke.

Sanchez was again running for Batangas governor against re-electionist Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto of the Liberal Party.

Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said the NP could have Sanchez replaced by any party member.
