GMA, still looking for numbers, plays coy on speakership

Posted by akosistella on May 20, 2010

PRESIDENT Arroyo will not be swayed by her party mates at the Lakas-Kampi CMD to run for Speaker as she is more interested in being the party leader in the incoming 15th session of Congress in July, a political aide said yesterday.

“It is impossible to change her mind. At the moment, she just wants to be like Sonia Gandhi, the head of the party but no position in Congress,” presidential political adviser Prospero Pichay Jr. told reporters.

Sonia, the widow of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, is president of the Indian National Congress party. She is chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha and the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party.

Escudero mulls Senate presidency

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero was not completely abandoning the idea of seeking the Senate presidency although he said he was not “actively” pursuing it.

“I don’t intend and I have not actively pursued it,” Escudero said at a press conference.

But asked if he was ready to take the challenge if there would be a number to elect him for the post, the senator said he would think about it.
