The banner headline of a Manila daily last week notwithstanding, the incoming education secretary is not, repeat, not a priest.
Armin Luistro is president of De La Salle University (DLSU), one of the country’s leading schools, and is a member of congregation that calls itself the De La Salle Christian Brothers in the Philippines. On their own website, the De La Salle Christian Brothers describe themselves as the largest group of religious men in the Catholic Church who are devoted exclusively to the ministry of education.
They are called Brothers—not “priests” who are authorized to dispense the sacraments. Nonetheless, “they dedicate their lives to God, to the Gospel, to the ministry of education in the Catholic Church, and especially to the young men and women whom they encounter each day inside and outside of the classroom.”
