Villar says PSE exposé timed for surveys

MANILA, Philippines – Beleaguered Nacionalista Party (NP) presidential candidate Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. yesterday questioned the results of the latest survey showing him in a tie for second place with former President Joseph Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino.

Villar said the results of the latest Pulse Asia survey came after Estrada and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile had accused him of exerting pressure on the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) to favor his real estate firms to allow the sale of locked up stocks.

He said the survey was “ill-motivated” since it was done at the time the accusations came out on April 23.

Noynoy won’t fall for psychological report trap

MANILA, Philippines – Liberal Party presidential candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III refused yesterday to lose his cool and said he won’t fall into the trap of his rivals’ insistence for him to undergo a psychiatric test and answer to fake psychological reports.

In Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro on Thursday and in Imus, Cavite yesterday, Aquino told reporters that his opponents were desperate to pin him down on bogus claims.

Aquino said the intention of those trying to portray him as psychologically unfit to become president was clearly to make him mad and fall into their trap. He said he would not give his rivals the satisfaction.

Comelec covers more bases for vote

Posted by akosistella on March 7, 2010

Revised General Instructions for Board of Election Inspectors (BEI), released on March 4, includes two new sections to “finetune the process and address procedural gaps” ahead of the May 10 national and local automated polls.

One new section (Section 37) addresses the possibility of ballot shortages in some precincts. “In case the official ballots of a precinct have all been used up and there are still voters registered at the precinct waiting to cast their votes,” the following procedure will be followed:

The chair of the BEI will ensure that the voters are eligible to vote and write down their names in the minutes. The chair then issues a certificate saying that they are indeed registered voters. The chair will then assign a third member of the BEI to accompany the voters to the next nearest precinct to cast their vote.

LP, NP hit Comelec warning on endorsements

Posted by akosistella on February 12, 2010

MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) regulation on celebrity endorsements should differentiate between those who are paid and those who are doing it for free, according to a member of the communications team of Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

“It should be clear that the spirit of the law is referring to paid endorsers, not volunteer supporters. It is the right of every citizen, whether an actor or not, to volunteer and support his candidate,” Campaigns and Grey President Yolanda Ong told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak when asked to comment on the Comelec reminder. Campaigns and Grey is a marketing-advertising company.

No more task forces

Posted by akosistella on February 8, 2010

WHOEVER the next president will be, he has to learn from the mistakes of the past.

For instance, it is clear that giving task forces major jobs – such as the one assigned to the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group (PASG) to stop smuggling – is clearly not the way to go.

The problem with task forces is that they do not fit in with the rest of the government, which works within certain parameters. Task forces are operational units that report directly to the President. Thus, they find no need to coordinate with the rest of the government or even to go through channels. They are legally created gangs of often disreputable agents.

Angie’s vow: No election brownouts

Posted by akosistella on February 8, 2010

ENERGY Secretary Angelo Reyes has given the assurance that there would be no brownouts during the election period, Malacañang yesterday said.

Deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar said Reyes has been meeting with power generators and distributors to ensure adequate power supply until the election period ends in June.

“They would take steps to make sure there would be no red, or even yellow, alert during the elections. Reyes has been meeting with people in Visayas and Mindanao to ask for their commitments,” he said.
