With each Gulp, 7-Elections tracks voting trend for polls

Posted by akosistella on April 17, 2010

On a sunny afternoon, 18-year-old student Mara Francisco walked from her home in Don Antonio, Quezon City to the nearest 7-Eleven branch. She picked up a sandwich and a juice drink with her chosen presidential candidate's face on the cup.

“I’ve been buying drinks in this cup since summer started and I think I’ve already contributed a lot to [my candidate’s] tally,” she said. “It’s a fun way to participate in the elections.”

In March, 24-hour convenience store 7-Eleven launched the 7-Elections promotion, an informal poll for the presidential candidates running for the 2010 elections using their in-house cup Gulp.

Instead of their signature red, the Gulp drink cups now come in different colors, bearing the faces and signature colors of the nine presidential candidates.

Marginalized

Posted by akosistella on April 1, 2010

THERE’S THE RUB
By Conrado de Quiros

“MARGINALIZED” HAS TWO MEANINGS.

The first is alienated. A marginalized group is alienated or stands outside the mainstream community. That is what commends it for party-list representation. By that token, the entire Arroyo clan may truly run as party-list representatives representing themselves. No group of people has ever been more alienated from their people. Not even the Marcoses. GMA has the added virtue, or vice, of being alienated from her position as well. Whom God has put in power, let no man put asunder, or cast aside. Whom Garci has put in power, that is another matter entirely.

I am tempted to say GMA’s entire government should run as a party-list group. But on second thought, not just the GMA government but all Philippine governments. I have yet to know of any institution in this country, past or present, more alienated from us. Remember the Rabbi’s answer in “Fiddler on the Roof” to the question, “Is there a proper blessing for the Czar?” “May God bless and keep the Czar far away from us.”

Dick Gordon gets my vote!

Posted by akosistella on March 25, 2010

…for the funniest video ad in this entire electoral campaign! Clap for him people! Although, maybe next time, Gordon and Bayani can do the Moymoy Palaboy routine themselves? Whatcha think people? Hehe.

The Grouchy Twins (a term coined w/ much affection by a solid supporter-my friend Anj) also gets my vote for being the most romantic during the campaign. These guys are joined at the hip! One doesn’t go around w/o the other. Did you see Gordon at the Harapan VP 2010 Debate last Sunday? Cute sila di ba? Must be love Sabel.

Now lemme tell you about the time Gordon walked out from a press conference….uhm..

Hacked!

Harapan: The VP Debate

Did you watch Sunday night’s vice presidential debate organized by ABS-CBN? At one point, Loren Legarda asked Mar Roxas why he kept shifting allegiances. Viewers were shocked to hear that from Loren. For a moment, they thought Jay Sonza would then be mocking Jejomar Binay for being dark-skinned.

Confusion

Posted by akosistella on March 17, 2010

AD LIB
By Greg Macabenta

Depending on which radio commentator you listen to, which newspaper you read, and which columnist you believe, the sure winner in the May 10 presidential election is Erap Estrada unless the victory is wrested by Gibo Teodoro who is a sure winner because of his party machinery unless Noynoy Aquino retains his lead over Manny Villar or unless Villar buys out all the voters and overtakes Aquino or unless God finally listens to Bro. Eddie Villanueva or unless Dick Gordon’s Bagumbayan volunteers finally step out of the shadows.

It looks like the only sure losers are JC de los Reyes and Nick Perlas, unless the voices of the true blue reformists are finally heard, above the din of jingles and commercials. Don’t hold your breath.

The Oscars and Philippine politics

Posted by akosistella on March 12, 2010

The 82nd Academy Awards:A Postscript

The 82nd Oscar Awards have been handed out. James Cameron’s costly sci-fi epic “Avatar” lost in the race for Best Picture. Sought for comment, Cameron said, “May this humbling experience serve as a warning to Sen. Manny Villar.”

A total of 10 films vied for Best Picture Oscar. Before the votes were counted, the frontrunners were “Avatar,” “The Hurt Locker,” and “Inglourious Basterds.” The seven other nominees were “Up in the Air,” “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “An Education,” “The Blind Side,” “A Serious Man,” “District 9,” and “Up.” In case you didn’t know, a scandal broke out a few weeks before the awards ceremonies when James Cameron, director of “Avatar,” the costliest nominated film, and the highest-grossing movie ever – allegedly tried to bribe the director of “Up In the Air” into quitting the race.

The art of the spin

Posted by akosistella on March 10, 2010

AD LIB
By Greg Macabenta

Every time I read the comments of the supporters and detractors of the presidential candidates, I’m reminded of this joke. I’m reminded, especially, of Prospero Pichay, political adviser of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. When a Pulse Asia survey revealed that 52% of respondents would not vote for a presidential candidate endorsed by Arroyo, obviously including the Lakas- Kampi official candidate Gilbert Teodoro, Pichay declared:

“It’s very good for Gibo. That means he already has the vote of 48%. The 52% would be a toss [sic] among the other presidential candidates, so this is very good.”

How Pichay drew that conclusion defies logic. But the Art of the Spin is supposed to skirt logic. The Art of the Spin requires the ability to keep a straight face and even flash a smile while trying to present the glass as half full instead of half empty.

DISPATCHES FROM THE ENCHANTED KINGDOM
By Manuel Buencamino

A week later I went to Gibo’s fundraiser. The organizers invited a hundred players but only eight showed up, and one of them was for Gordon. So there were nine participants in all, if you include me, the impartial columnist in a yellow sports shirt.

“Same as the surveys, seven Gibo and one Gordon,” I quipped. No one laughed. “At least Gibo gained two since the last survey.” Not even a mercy chuckle. But I persisted, “The good news is Gloria and Mike will award the trophies, although they will be a bit late.” Someone smiled, finally.

To die like Christ

LIFE IN GLORIA’S ENCHANTED KINGDOM
By Manuel Buencamino

An old priest who lay dying in his hospital bed motioned to his nurse to come near.

“Yes, Father?” asked the nurse..

“I would like to see Manny Villar and Gloria Arroyo before I die.” whispered the priest.

“I’ll see what I can do, Father,” she replied.

Villar phoned Arroyo after he heard from the nurse..

Gordon calls for less rice in Filipinos’ diet

Posted by akosistella on February 20, 2010

MANILA, Philippines — Eat less rice and be healthy. Import less rice and have a better economy.

That’s according to Sen. Richard Gordon, who has called on Filipinos to eat less rice, not only to avoid health problems such as diabetes, but also to help government better manage its rice supply.

THIS has got to be the most brilliant economic-nutritional policy I’ve heard from any presidentiable yet! God save us.

New political gimmick: Candidates turn to PUBs for ad spaces

Posted by akosistella on February 1, 2010

With just days to go before the start of the official campaign period, some national candidates for the May 10 polls have found unique ad spaces in rear side of public utility buses (PUBs).

Large body stickers of both administration and opposition candidates were seen plastered on the rear of buses plying routes in Quezon City.

The stickers bearing beaming faces of candidate were large enough to cover almost the entire backside of a PUB.

Manny’s Enchanted Kingdom

Posted by akosistella on January 27, 2010

Dispatches from the Enchanted Kingdom
By Manuel Buencamino

Afriend sent me a text that said, “GMA plundered when she became president. Manny Villar is only a candidate but he already took a cash advance.”

I called her up, demanding an explanation.

She said the draft report of the Senate Committee of the Whole recommended censure for Senator Villar and asked him to return all the money “he has or his companies have illegally gained or obtained as a result of unlawful acts and improper and unethical conduct.”
