Lakas-Kampi coalition plans decisive ‘Battle of the Bulge’

Posted by akosistella on March 23, 2010

Like a stealthy army preparing to launch a major offensive, the ruling administration coalition Lakas-Kampi-CMD is moving heaven and earth at the grassroots to save the lagging presidential candidacy of former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

The question that perplexes many party leaders is: Considering that Teodoro is running behind, why move only now?The ruling coalition, which enjoys a headlock on 70 percent of local government positions, is pinning its hopes on superior resources and widespread party machinery to swing the tide of battle.

Madrigal is ‘greenest’ presidential bet

MANILA, Philippines—Senator Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal is the most “green beans” among the presidential aspirants, various environmental groups said.

Following Madrigal, other leaders considered as green beans or pro-people and pro-environment are Nicanor “Nicky” Perlas and Senator Manny Villar.

The most mean beans or the least pro-people and pro-environment, meanwhile, is Senator Richard Gordon, followed by former president Joseph Estrada and former defense secretary Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro.

Gordon hails new law that makes it easier to secure land titles

Posted by akosistella on March 20, 2010

Presidential aspirant Richard Gordon on Thursday hailed the passage of a bill that would allow residents to acquire titles for residential properties they have possessed for more than 10 years.

Gordon, who authored the Free Patent Act, said he was “elated” that Malacañang “finally” signed the measure that has been ratified by both chambers of Congress since last December.

Erap takes swipe at Villar, Noynoy

(Those who consider themselves as part of the opposition, they’re all liars, especially the one who has appropriated my campaign’s official color.)

One of his rivals in the presidential race, Senator Manuel ‘Manny’ Villar, uses orange as his campaign color.

Oversized posters may ban six bets from presidential contest

Posted by akosistella on March 20, 2010

Six of nine Philippine presidential candidates may face disqualification after their campaign materials have reportedly exceeded size limits and were allegedly posted in areas where these are disallowed.

Several campaign materials of Senator Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III (Liberal Party), former president Joseph M. Ejercito Estrada (Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino-UNO), Senator Richard J. Gordon (Bagumbayan), Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. (Lakas-Kampi-CMD), evangelist Eddie C. Villanueva (Bangon Pilipinas), and Senator Manuel Villar Jr. (Nacionalista Party) seem to violate campaign regulations, a Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson told reporters.

Villar protests tax on campaign spending

SAGAY CITY, Negros Occidental, Philippines – Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Sen. Manuel Villar Jr., who reportedly has spent the most in the ongoing campaign, is protesting the government’s tax collection on campaign spending.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), which is carrying out the collection of the tax, has indicated that it would most likely miss its target collection of P1.2 billion for this May’s elections.

Villar said he could not see how the BIR can talk about missing its target when the basis for the collection of the campaign tax is questionable.

GMA cronies took advantage of Mindanao power crisis – Erap

Posted by akosistella on March 18, 2010

MANILA, Philippines –   Former President Joseph Estrada accused yesterday the Arroyo administration of causing the power crisis in Mindanao to “line the pockets” of associates.

Speaking to reporters at the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) national headquarters in Mandaluyong, Estrada said the power crisis in Mindanao could have been avoided had the administration acted on it properly.

“The Arroyo administration did not take any concrete steps to avoid the calamity,” he said.

Estrada: Aquino and Villar are so presumptuous

Posted by akosistella on March 17, 2010

Former president Joseph Estrada said Wednesday he was not amused with the way the two frontrunners in major surveys of presidential candidates were projecting themselves during the campaign for the May 10 elections.

Estrada said both Aquino and Villar should show some humility and should not act as if they were certain of winning and of what to do in the event they succeed President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Confusion

Posted by akosistella on March 17, 2010

AD LIB
By Greg Macabenta

Depending on which radio commentator you listen to, which newspaper you read, and which columnist you believe, the sure winner in the May 10 presidential election is Erap Estrada unless the victory is wrested by Gibo Teodoro who is a sure winner because of his party machinery unless Noynoy Aquino retains his lead over Manny Villar or unless Villar buys out all the voters and overtakes Aquino or unless God finally listens to Bro. Eddie Villanueva or unless Dick Gordon’s Bagumbayan volunteers finally step out of the shadows.

It looks like the only sure losers are JC de los Reyes and Nick Perlas, unless the voices of the true blue reformists are finally heard, above the din of jingles and commercials. Don’t hold your breath.

Top 3 bets use up half of ad caps in first month

Posted by akosistella on March 17, 2010

JUST a mere month into the 90-day official campaign period, three presidential candidates have already used up more than half of their allowed ad airtime in the country’s two top networks.

This is even as data from media monitoring agency Nielsen Media indicate a relatively tempered ad-spending among the candidates, compared to the three months prior to the start of the campaign period.

As it is, Nielsen says that from February 9 to March 8, 2010, Nacionalista Party standard bearer Senator Manuel ‘Manny’ Villar had racked up ads worth P150 million or about 34 percent of the P442 million total ad value posted by the six candidates who had placements in TV, radio, and print.

Erap: Noynoy is my toughest rival

Posted by akosistella on March 16, 2010

FORMER President Joseph Estrada, who is seeking the presidency under the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino, yesterday said Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III of the Liberal Party is his toughest rival.

“Siya (Aquino) talaga yung pinakamahirap na talunin sa eleksiyon. Sa tingin ko ang No. 1 ang mahirap talunin,” Estrada said.

Aquino has been topping surveys, followed by Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday admitted it cannot disqualify politicians running for local positions who will join victory parties for boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

“If it’s a local candidate, because of the Supreme Court ruling, they are not yet considered candidates for purposes of premature campaigning and, therefore, they are not yet within the limitations of the law,” said Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal.

In Cabanatuan City, NP presidential bet Manny Villar said Pacquiao told him by phone that he will immediately come home to campaign.

Former foe now runs with Estrada

Posted by akosistella on March 16, 2010

MANILA, Philippines—From one of those who joined calls for the ouster of former President Joseph Estrada in 2001, lawyer JV Bautista of the militant Sanlakas group has turned supporter and now passionately defends the ex-president in their campaign sorties.

Bautista, who is running for senator under Estrada’s Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), devotes much of his speeches to tackling the folly of having ousted Estrada in the “Edsa Dos” revolution nine years ago.

YELLOW PAD
By Filomeno Sta Ana III, Mar. 7, 2010

Winnie Monsod’s impostor attacked not only Villar for his corruption but the other candidates as well. The impostor rebuked Gibo Teodoro for his false galing at talino and his association with Arroyo. The impostor criticized Erap Estrada for his miserable performance when he was president. The impostor did not even spare Juan Ponce Enrile, describing him as a “crook who should be jailed.”What adds a little sophistication and credibility to the piece is that the fake Monsod acknowledges the flaws of Noynoy Aquino and even expresses concern over the Liberal Party, which “has its own share of crooks.”

Inquirer readers talk back about the leaders they want

Posted by akosistella on March 15, 2010

The 2010 election is really about change and democracy.

It’s about “change, choice and direction,” said Tom Fresinido, who sent his response via fax. Kerwin Lu of Davao, on the other hand, said the 2010 election is about “changes that can be done and who can do it.”

Of the 840 responses, 239 (28.5 percent) cited election, democracy, voters, politics and citizens, as what the May elections are really about.

In RP, online support may not translate into votes

Posted by akosistella on March 11, 2010

But in the Philippines, which has a more limited Internet penetration than America, it is unclear how online support will translate in to votes. The Nacionalista Party candidate Villar dropped six percentage points in the latest Pulse Asia survey. Villar’s campaign website links to a Facebook fan page that has 817,455 fans, a Twitter account that has 1,296 followers, and a Friendster account with 16,379 fans.

The Pulse Asia survey showed a six percentage point increase for Estrada, who has a comparatively smaller presence on social networking platforms. The Facebook and Twitter accounts linked to Estrada’s official website have 14,560 fans and 670 followers respectively. His Friendster account has 41 fans.

New media consultant Carlo Ople is skeptical that politicians in the Philippines will be able to replicate Obama’s success. “Social media is not a one-night stand. It’s a long term thing,” said Ople, noting that the candidates in the Philippines started their online campaigns only a few months before election day.

The art of the spin

Posted by akosistella on March 10, 2010

AD LIB
By Greg Macabenta

Every time I read the comments of the supporters and detractors of the presidential candidates, I’m reminded of this joke. I’m reminded, especially, of Prospero Pichay, political adviser of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. When a Pulse Asia survey revealed that 52% of respondents would not vote for a presidential candidate endorsed by Arroyo, obviously including the Lakas- Kampi official candidate Gilbert Teodoro, Pichay declared:

“It’s very good for Gibo. That means he already has the vote of 48%. The 52% would be a toss [sic] among the other presidential candidates, so this is very good.”

How Pichay drew that conclusion defies logic. But the Art of the Spin is supposed to skirt logic. The Art of the Spin requires the ability to keep a straight face and even flash a smile while trying to present the glass as half full instead of half empty.

Credibility

By DUCKY PAREDES

MANNY Villar’s problem has always been that the image of himself that he has been projecting has always been too good to be true – a slum kid who swam in a sea of garbage whose parents were so poor that a brother died because they had no money for medicine, gets to be a multi-billionaire and now wants to be president so he can get the poor out of poverty.
