LOWDOWN By Jojo Robles

Since it now appears that the Yellow faction is going to handily beat the politicians’ camp in the in-house battle for access to and control of the presidency, it’s good to know who the movers and shakers in this ascendant sub-group in N/A’s organization are. At the very least, the following information will help those people who are right now desperately trying to find out who to send their resumes to, in the hopes of snagging some of the spoils that the incoming administration will be handing out.

The Sisters—all of them, yes, Kris included—belong to the most exclusive inner circle of N/A’s camp. These women, to whom Cory entrusted the care, feeding and even the clothing of N/A, will hold the most power next to the incoming president himself, when it comes to matters of policy, appointments and most of the other day-to-day stuff that require N/A’s attention.

The Sisters were the first to start campaigning to junk Roxas by quietly asking financial backers and local supporters of N/A to start considering a “Noy-Bi” tandem behind Roxas’ back. The Designated Girlfriend, Valenzuela’s Shalani Soledad, may soon join this club, if she passes muster and improves her standing to First Lady during N/A’s term.

Infighting in Aquino camp goes public

THE infighting in the camp of president-elect Benigno Aquino III went public Monday, after a leader of his volunteers group accused Liberal Party politicians and the Hyatt 10 of hijacking reform.

“From the start, the rift was between the reformist volunteer groups and the trapo political party,” said Conrado de Quiros, a columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and a member of the Volunteers for Noynoy [Aquino] Movement’s executive committee.

On one side of the rift are the supporters of Aquino’s vice presidential running mate, Manuel Roxas II; the so-called Hyatt 10, composed of former Cabinet members who broke with President Gloria Arroyo; Liberal Party officials led by campaign manager Florencio Abad; and former Arroyo Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz.

Interesting points raised in both these pieces. I’m surprised though that a distinguished columnist like Mr. De Quiros allows himself to be involved in these issues. Affected, kasi totoo ang mga bintang?

Comelec proclaims Osmeña, Lapid, Guingona

Posted by akosistella on May 18, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, on Tuesday proclaimed Sergio Osmeña III (independent), Manuel “Lito” Lapid (Lakas-Kampi CMD) and Teofisto Guingona III (Liberal Party) as senators until 2016.

Comelec Chairman Jose Melo said the poll body decided to proclaim the 3 bets since the remaining votes to be counted “would no longer material affect the outcome of the election.”

Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal earlier said the poll body had less than 500,000 votes left to canvass.

The proclamation was held at the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila.

Last Saturday, the NBoC proclaimed the first nine winning senators who will serve until 2016 namely; Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. (Lakas-Kampi CMD); Sen. “Jinggoy” Estrada (Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino); Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago (People’s Reform Party); former Senate President Franklin Drilon (Liberal Party); Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile (Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino); Sen. Pia Cayetano (Nacionalista Party); Rep. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (Nacionalista Party); former senator Ralph Recto (Liberal Party); and former senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto III (Nationalist People’s Coalition). (ABS-CBN News)

Trouble rocks LP camp

Posted by akosistella on April 8, 2010

MANILA, Philippines—In the final leg of the campaign, just when its top candidates are pulling away from the competition, the Liberal Party LP appears to be in turmoil.

Team Chiz, made up of the staff and supporters of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, has been eased out of the party campaign reportedly because of rising tension between its principal and the LP vice presidential candidate, Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

A source from Team Chiz, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the subject, said Escudero was endorsing and campaigning for LP standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, but not Roxas.

For his vice presidential candidate, Escudero has chosen Jejomar Binay, the running mate of Joseph Estrada, according to the source.

WHY Sen. Aquino chooses to associate himself with shady Sen. Chiz Escudero is anybody’s guess. How can you even trust the guy? He never looks at you straight in the eye. He’s an arrogant piece of work – one of the primary reasons even his erstwhile patron, Danding Cojuangco of the Nationalist People’s Coalition didn’t want to support his presidential bid. Imagine demanding a P2 billion campaign kitty for his presidential bid? Miffed, Cojuangco decides the guy only deserves P200 million.

Escudero is the guy who claimed he never got help from anybody, but overlooked the many times that he had used the San Miguel plane to go to his campaign sorties. He is a fake, and a trouble maker. It’s about time Sen. Roxas took back the reins of the LP and kicked out the likes of Escudero and other bad eggs in the crew. Bravo!

Serge says Cebu going for Noynoy

Posted by akosistella on March 27, 2010

MANILA, Philippines—Cebu remains “Cory country” and her son, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, leads the presidential derby in the province by a mile, according to a stalwart of the Aquino camp.

Liberal Party (LP) senatorial candidate Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III said in a text message that the reported defection of congressmen belonging to the Garcia family to Sen. Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party did not matter much in the province.

“Noynoy leads by a mile. That’s Cory country. Watch the next surveys,” said Osmeña, whose family supported the late President Corazon Aquino. The family remains a dominant force in Cebu and is considered archnemesis of the Garcia clan.

Cebu’s Gov. Garcia still all-out for Teodoro

CEBU CITY—Not so fast, Manny Villar; Cebu is still for Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro.

Speaking at a meeting of the One Cebu party on Wednesday night, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia said that nothing had changed since her party late last year endorsed the former defense secretary and administration standard-bearer in the May 10 elections.

“In this season of shifting political alliances, they say there is no such thing as word of honor, but I beg to disagree,” she said, stressing repeatedly that she was keeping her “palabra de honor” in her 20-minute speech in Cebu City.

IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU WANT TO LEAVE the country. That’s the Pulse Asia survey that shows these 12 senatorial candidates on top: 1. Bong Revilla, 2. Jinggoy Estrada, 3. Miriam Santiago, 4. Pia Cayetano, 5. Franklin Drilon, 6. Juan Ponce Enrile, 7. Tito Sotto, 8. Ralph Recto, 9. Serge Osmeña, 10. Bongbong Marcos, 11. Lito Lapid, and 12. TG Guingona.

That’s got important—and dismaying—things to say about our political culture.

Doy Laurel’s ‘Impossible Dream’

Posted by akosistella on March 1, 2010

By Babe Romualdez | The Philippine Star

Those who remember Doy are seeing parallelisms between the late vice president and Mar Roxas whose grandfather Manuel A. Roxas ironically pardoned Doy’s father. Like Laurel, Mar also dreamed of becoming president and serving the people, working so hard to attain this dream. But the surge of emotion and sympathy triggered by the death of Cory Aquino catapulted Noynoy to popularity — an opportunity used by some to pressure Roxas into giving way and sliding down to the vice presidency. But even before the LP is yet to win in the May elections, infighting between many groups plus the reported existence of an LP mafia is widening the fracture within, as Noynoy himself admitted when he said he was stepping in to take control. The cracks appeared when Serge Osmeña broke away, bitterly complaining that a powerful mafia block was making decisions for the LP standard bearer.

Serge Osmeña misses LP rally on own turf

Posted by akosistella on March 1, 2010

CEBU CITY—Liberal Party senatorial candidate and campaign strategist Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III was noticeably absent from the first political foray made by LP presidential and vice presidential candidates Benigno Aquino III and Manuel Roxas II, respectively, to this his hometown.

In an interview, both Aquino and Roxas said Osmeña could not make it to Saturday night’s political rally at the sports center here—which was attended by between 40,000 and 60,000 people by their estimate—because he was busy.

Both candidates, however, insisted that the presence of Osmeña’s brother, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, more than made up for his absence.

Serge Osmeña returns to LP as ‘campaign janitor’

Posted by akosistella on February 19, 2010

MANILA, Philippines – Former Senator Serge Osmeña has returned to the Liberal Party (LP) to take a key role in shaking up the campaign of the party’s tandem, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Senator Manuel “Mar” Roxas II.

“I’m helping out,” Osmeña confirmed in a text message to abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak.

Asked what his designation will be, he joked: “Campaign janitor.”

“I don’t want or need to shake up any part. Only to make the parts work smoothly and together. To help 'Noy and Mar go farther, faster,” Osmeña added.

Serge Osmeña back in Aquino camp, in Recto’s team

Posted by akosistella on February 12, 2010

The Liberal Party (LP) has split its senatorial ticket into two six-member teams to ensure maximum presence in 80 provinces in the 90-day campaign period.

LP leaders, however, have surprisingly lumped Osmeña and Recto, who genuinely hate each other, in the same team.

Recto has been designated as point man of the antipoverty team with Osmeña under his wing. Former Senate President Franklin Drilon is head of the anticorruption team.
