Campaigning for the separation of Kris and State

Posted by akosistella on July 5, 2010

Only three definite things in this world: death, taxes, and a Kris Aquino controversy.Three days before President Noynoy Aquino’s inauguration, she did the inevitable: almost stealing the limelight away from her brother’s inauguration, in a tearful farewell announcement on The Buzz, which should receive an award for propagating cultural enlightenment. And for fuck’s sake, how many times has she delivered lachrymose farewells on that show already? In the second to the last week, her name came up in the front pages of newspapers, allegedly for trying to have a hand in selecting the next senate president. She was reportedly calling up senators one by one to support Sen. Francis Pangilinan. One of the candidates for the post, Franklin Drilon, admitted he—a Cory loyalist through and through—was deeply hurt. A week after… kaboom! She will not be eclipsed by her elder brother’s shindig. And she will never understand the real joys and values of privacy.

Danding still mum on supporting Aquino

Posted by akosistella on March 15, 2010

On Saturday night, Cojuangco, chair emeritus of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), said he would rather not be involved in politics anymore.

“Matanda na tayo, ayaw ko na makialam sa pulitika (We’re already old. I don’t want to be involved in politics anymore),” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Asked if the support of his daughter, Liza Cojuangco-Cruz, who had joined Aquino’s campaign sortie in Iloilo, and his brother, Henry, for Aquino was tantamount to his endorsement, Cojuangco said: “They are free to choose, bahala sila (It’s their call).”

Noynoy patches up crack with televangelist

“What I heard is that Pastor Quiboloy was said to have expressed that he was touched by the humility of Noynoy,” said former agriculture secretary Butch Abad, general campaign manager of the Liberal Party.

“Noynoy sought out an appointment and Quiboloy granted that. Their talk was accompanied with a dinner,” he said.

Aquino was accompanied by his running mate, Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas.

Family and politics

IN FAIRNESS, dragging in Noynoy’s name in what essentially is a spat between two TV personalities (and two TV networks) is grossly unfair. Noynoy had as much to do with Kris’ supposed cattiness and tactlessness as Manny Villar may have had to do with Willie Revillame’s crassness and arrogance, or Dolphy’s way with women.

Before this latest imbroglio, political circles were abuzz with how Kris’ influence would increase exponentially should her brother top the elections. I even heard apprehensions about how Kris and her “best buddy,” co-host Boy Abunda, would end up dictating policy in Malacañang, which is absurd not because Kris and Boy are incompetent or “pang-showbiz lamang,” but because I doubt if Noynoy and his advisers would allow them any leeway.

Bishops break tradition, back JC de los Reyes’ candidacy

Posted by akosistella on March 7, 2010

Breaking with tradition, six local Catholic bishops have officially announced their support for Ang Kapatiran Party standard bearer JC de los Reyes, calling it “the conscience vote for 2010.”

Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles, Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, Bishop Antonio Pepito Palang of San Jose, Mindoro, Novaliches Bishop Antonio Tobias, Joseph Nacua of Ilagan, and retired Bishop Teodoro Bacani, declared support for De los Reyes, who is an outspoken critic of the controversial Reproductive Health RH Bill.

In an article posted on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines CBCP website on Saturday, however, the Church announced that it is “breaking [the] tradition of offering commentary on election-related moral issues without endorsing candidates.”

Gibo vows less use of executive privilege under his presidency

Administration party presidential bet Gilberto Teodoro Jr. on Friday said he wants “minimal use” of executive privilege if he is elected to the presidency in the upcoming May polls.

Asked in a forum about projects of the Arroyo administration that he intends not to continue, Teodoro replied that he wants the use of the executive privilege to be kept at “a minimum.”

“I think the demand of the people is for administration change and a leadership change. I guarantee transparency. I will use to a minimum, without saying that I will abandon, executive privilege,” he said.
